General Appearance: Shalane is hardly the sort of person you would expect to see around horses. She is extremely short, not even 5 feet tall. Her hair has a natural wave and volume to it that make it easy to make look good, and she tends to keep it black. The dark hair makes her blue eyes completely pop. She's tiny. Some have even accused her of being anorexic or bulimic, and they're not actually too far of the mark.

Personality: Shalane comes across as very outgoing and fiery. And she is certainly a fighter. She loves people and being around people, although guys tend to make her nervous, for obvious reasons when you read her history. However, she isn't nearly as self assured as she comes across. She is, in fact, bulimic, extremely paranoid that she'll get too heavy to ride and race. She also struggles highly with self worth and confidence, although one would never know it to look at her. She is also highly loyal, one of the best friends you could ask for. Usually because it's easier to worry about other people's problems than her own. And she is definitely a fighter. She's the one you'd want at her side if you were going into battle....

History: Unlike so many other people's histories, Shalane's does not start with a love story. In fact, hers starts with something close to rape. If you wanted to go way back, you could see that her mother was highly abused by Shalane's grandfather, including rape. At 15, Annalise Barcelona ran away from her home in Connecticut. She ran fast and far, and eventually ended up in LA, a year later. There she wandered the streets for a while, and,, eventually found that she could make money off of her body. Nobody asked about her age, and she never told. It started simple, in bars with pole dancing, and then strip tease, but eventually she as prostituting.
Of course, that couldn't go on long without an accident happening, and, pop, along came Shalane. Annalise tried her best by Shalane, really, she did, but she never knew any better. She came from a long line of prostitutes, alcoholics, drug addicts. It was indeed a vicious cycle, and a hard one to break. By the time she was going to kindergarten, Shalane had been abused, drunk, high, and raped. Annalise found that she could make extra money by selling her daughter's body, and so she did. This might not have mattered as much, because Shalane was a fighter. She did well in school. It was her escape. She hid her bruises well, (she was quite the little con artist, probably learned from her mother) and she seemed a normal, happy 5 year old girl. No one suspected a thing.
Eventually, Annalise did realize the error of her ways, and she started attempting to better herself. Eventually, she found an upper elite businessman in LA, and it wasn't long before they were living together. Things were great. Ian was a wealthy man who made good money, and suddenly Annalise and Shalane didn't have a care in the world...At least as far as Annalise was concerned. She couldn't possibly know that any time Shalane was alone with Ian she was raped, even more brutally than when her poor, childish body had been sold in prostitution. And Ian was out to break Shalane. Not to kill her, just to break her. To torture her, to make her suffer, to break her spirit. Ian was one twisted, twisted man. And he almost succeeded in his goal.
Annalise never believed Shalane when her daughter tried to tell her what was wrong, because, slowly, Shalane was fading, and, by the time she was 12, she was but a ghost of her former self. Nothing she did was ever good enough for Ian. He was always yelling at her, always shoving her around. The sexual abuse she probably could have taken. She didn't know any different, didn't know it wasn't normal. But the constant pressure, always being told she wasn't good enough, broke Shalane, broke her spirit. She was a pleaser, and it killed her that she couldn't do anything right.
When she was 13, she ran away, and ended up at a barn on the outskirts of LA. Of course, the man who ran the barn (eventually) earned Shalane's trust and Ethan took the young, broken girl under his wing. She was a natural with horses from the very beginning. She had a quiet manner that eased them and she had good natural balance and seat, and soft hands. She was a superb rider by the time she as 16, despite the fact that she had been riding for less time than many of the other students at the barn.
When she as 16, Shalane saw horse racing on TV, and, instantly, she knew what she wanted to do. Of course, Ethan had connections in Kentucky, and he got her in with a small barn, who was willing to take her on as a groom and eventually let her work up to exercise rider. Shalane ran, although by that time she had her little sister, Amelia to worry about. Determined to make a better life for herself, Shalane made it to Kentucky. She worked with that barn for a while, until it went under. Then she eventually found her way to Lafayer stables, surprisingly. She is now working as an exercise rider, hoping to try for her apprentice jockey's license soon. Her dream is to get herself settled and get Amelia out of her mother's hold...Soon, soon.
